SEVENTEEN

It was called Bruno’s, a restaurant that consisted of one small room turned with Italian flair into something full of character and warmth.

They sat at a table at the back, a secluded recess amongst greenery and terracotta pots, looking at each other over the red-shaded light, glasses of Frascati in their hands.

Jean ran her tongue over her lip.

‘I suppose we’d better get back.’

James Larsson sat back.

‘Where?’

‘To the hospital.’

He played with the edge of his glass on the table, running a finger around its rim. He didn’t speak immediately. She grappled with the idea that he might say he wanted to stay the night with her, and decided, yes she would. Everything had happened so quickly, yet she felt happier than she had ever been in her life.

‘OK.’

It cut off any such thoughts. Disappointment must have momentarily cast a shadow across her features because he smiled.

‘There’s plenty of time. We’ve got the rest of our lives.’

Jean felt a warmth, a contentment. It was, after all the months that had gone before, like coming home into a safe haven.
